The Home Portal
Art Installation @ Durham, UK
Art by Ruby Law
Where do you call home? Perhaps home is where you feel happiness, where you have a sense of belonging, no matter how small. Home is where you have a purpose. For me, the idea of home is almost a place that I don’t appreciate when I am there. The piece captures the struggle to find a place to be called home. Three layers of maps were illuminated as an infinite image one on top of another:
The map of Hong Kong (where I grew up)
The map of London (where I live)
The map of Durham (where the art installation is)
The choice of the locations of the maps has very special meaning to me personally. The recordings of the urban soundscape of the three different locations will be played in the background, the indistinct chats in different languages. It is a passageway to my past and present, and the bittersweet of being able to call a place home.
