SUMMER BLUES
Terence Lam, Hong Kong [2022]
Set Design by Ruby Law
Summer Blues Concert 2022 is the first arena show by Terence Lam. A scaled-up pair of glasses is positioned on a book in the middle of the stage. The scenes drift through layers of narrative: emptiness, nostalgia, disappointment, excitement, and gratification. We experience the waves of summer through the lens of Terence.
Due to an incident at the venue a month ago, there are many additional restrictions to the design of the stage. We cannot suspend any moving objects from the ceiling, there are no stage lifts or big revolve, and all the props have to be shorter than 1.7m not to block the audience's sightline. How can we create a roundhouse arena show without all these elements?
After adjusting the design for 19 versions, we returned to the first initial design concept I created a year ago. It has come full circle, and I could not be more thankful to Terence for believing in the idea and having the confidence to present something unconventional to our audiences.
